Tomato Rasam
Tomato rasam is a South Indian rice accompaniment. It is very tasty & healthy. It can be consumed as soup. It is an excellent remedy for common cold.
What you will need
1/4th Cup Tur Dal
A pinch of Turmeric Powder & Asafoetida
3 Small Tomatoes
1.5 tbsp Black Pepper
2 tsp Cumin seeds (Jeera)
4 cloves of Garlic
1 tsp Mustard
1 Green Chill
1 Small Piece Ginger, roughly chopped
Corriander & Curry leaves for garnishing
Oil & Ghee 1 tsp each
Salt To Taste

Pressure cook Tuvar Dal with turmeric powder & asafoetida. Once done, mash dal, add 1 cup (240ml) of water. Strain the water & keep aside. Pressure cook tomatoes & puree them.

Dry roast cumin, pepper & garlic. Pound them to coarse powder in mortar (or spice grinder

In a pan, heat ghee and oil. Add mustard. Once it crackles add chilli, ginger and the ground powder. Saute for a minute.

Add the tomato puree. Stir for couple of seconds. Add the tur dal water. {By now some dal would have settled down in the water. Keep it aside to use later}

Add salt. Cover & cook in low flame for 5 minutes.

After 5 mins, add the tur dal (residue from the tur water) and half cup water. Switch to high flame.

It will start to foam up on top. Add corriander and curry leaves. When it begins to boil, switch off.
