Slice the broccoli into bite-sized florets.
5
Slice the tofu into slabs (about 1/2" thick).
6
Pop the tofu slabs in the microwave for about 3 minutes to heat it up and pull off some moisture.
7
Drain the tofu slabs and dry them off with paper towels. The worst thing about cispy tofu is how many paper towels it wastes. A good, clean kitchen towel is an option, but you'll probably need several.
8
Dust the tofu evenly in corn starch.
9
Heat the toasted sesame in a large skillet over medium heat
10
Gently place the tofu slabs in the hot oil. Let them sizzle, untouched until golden brown on the bottom.
11
Toss the star anise into the hot oil. Then, start flipping the tofu slabs to crisp up the opposite side.
12
Clear a little space in the pan and add the brown sugar. Give it a few minutes to start melting.
13
Once the tofu is evenly golden brown on both sides, add the vinegar near the brown sugar.
14
Add the ketchup and stir until the sugar, vinegar, and ketchup are mixed evenly into a sauce.
15
Add the broccoli florets.
16
Coat the crispy tofu in sauce and transfer them to a holding plate.
17
Stir the broccoli over heat until cooked to your liking.
18
Serve over rice.
