Make sure you have the right knife for the job. A sharp knife is preferred in order to leave a sharp, clean edge on your tomato slices. A serrated knife is acceptable as well, but the resulting texture won't be as pleasing.

Slice to the desired thickness. By slicing parallel to the stem end, you end up with an attractive cross section of tomato.

Avoid using a dull knife, as this will end up squishing the tomato more than cutting it. If you look closely, you can see a ragged edge. And you know that the flesh of the tomato will be partially crushed as well.
