You might as well give them a rinse so they'll be ready to go when you need them. You really don't know where those tomatoes have been.
3
In general, fresh tomatoes should be stored in a cool, dry place, not below 55°F. Storing tomatoes at low temperatures can give them a mealy texture and hinder proper flavor development.
4
Try to make sure none of your tomatoes are touching in order to ensure that they stay dry. This will help avoid mold growth.
5
Lining a tray with parchment or paper towels can add an extra barrier against the moisture accumulation that can cause your tomatoes to spoil.
6
In the odd case that you can't use your tomatoes immediately and they are already overripe, you can refrigerate them to halt ripening. While this will degrade texture and flavor, this is sometimes preferable to mold or overripening.
7
Smaller tomatoes tend to suffer less from refrigeration. A large heirloom tomato can be ruined by refrigeration. But grape tomatoes can be chilled and returned to room temperature without degrading.
8
Make sure to let your tomatoes come up to room temperature before serving.
